The Short Answer

Proof of income is any document that credibly shows how much you earn. The most accepted are pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, tax returns, bank statements, profit and loss statements, employment letters, and proof of income letters. Reviewers usually want two that confirm the same number — consistency matters more than any single document.

The Complete List of Proof of Income Documents

1. Pay Stubs

The everyday standard. Employees get them automatically; self-employed and gig workers can generate their own from real earnings. Landlords often ask for the 2–3 most recent.

2. W-2 Form

Annual summary of an employee's wages and taxes withheld. Strong for confirming last year's income.

3. 1099 Forms

For contractors and gig workers, 1099-NEC and 1099-K document what clients and platforms paid you.

4. Federal Tax Return (Form 1040)

The most authoritative single document, especially for the self-employed. Schedule C shows business income and expenses.

5. Bank Statements

Two to three months showing consistent deposits. Excellent current-income proof, particularly for the self-employed.

6. Profit and Loss Statement

Summarizes revenue minus expenses to reveal real net income. A P&L statement is especially persuasive to lenders.

7. Employment or Offer Letter

States your salary and position. Useful for new jobs where pay stubs don't exist yet.

8. Proof of Income Letter

A plain-language statement of your monthly or annual income. A proof of income letter is handy when other documents are thin.

9. Benefit or Award Letters

Social Security, disability, pension, or unemployment award letters count as income for many applications.

The One Rule That Matters Most

Whatever you send, make your documents agree with each other. If your pay stub says $5,000 a month, your bank statements should show roughly $5,000 in deposits, and your tax return should support that annual range. Mismatched numbers are the fastest way to get an application flagged. Matching numbers are the fastest way to get approved.

Submit truthful documents. Every proof of income document must reflect income you actually earned and be backed by your records. Creating or altering documents to misstate income is fraud. StubFast is for documenting genuine income only.
